Why Digitals (Polaroids) Are More Important Than Ever

If there’s one thing every aspiring commercial model must master in today’s industry, it’s creating strong digitals—also known as polaroids.

I’ve been modeling for over 20 years, and I can tell you: in the early 2000s, digitals were something you took for agency files after you were signed. Today, they’re your first audition, often before anyone even meets you in person.

What Are Digitals?

Digitals are simple, unedited photos taken in natural light that show you exactly as you are—no retouching, no filters, and no elaborate styling.

They are used by agents, casting directors, and clients to see your true, current appearance.

Think of them as your honesty card in the modeling world.

Why They’re More Important Now

In today’s fast-paced, online-first commercial modeling industry:

  • Every submission starts with digitals—before your portfolio or comp card.

  • Agencies are often scouting online only, so your digitals are the first impression they see.

  • Brands want authenticity—digitals prove you look like your photos.

  • Quick-turn castings require you to be ready to shoot new digitals in minutes, not weeks.

The Perfect Digitals Checklist

Here’s exactly how to create agency- and client-approved digitals:

  1. Background: Plain wall (white or light grey) with no clutter.

  2. Lighting: Natural daylight—stand facing a window for even light.

  3. Outfit: Fitted jeans or leggings + plain tank or t-shirt.

  4. Shoes: Barefoot or simple heels for women, barefoot or sneakers for men.

  5. Makeup & Hair: Minimal makeup, hair natural and away from face.

  6. Angles to Include:

    • Full-length (front, side, back)

    • ¾ length (front and side)

    • Close-up headshot (front, profile)

  7. Expression: Neutral face and a natural smile.

How Often to Update Digitals

  • Every 4–6 months minimum.

  • For babies and children, every 1-2 months minimum
  • Anytime your look changes (hair color, length, body shape, piercings, tattoos).

  • Before big submissions to agencies or major campaigns.

The Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using filters or editing apps—clients will notice immediately.

  • Shooting in poor lighting—harsh shadows can distort your look.

  • Wearing busy patterns, logos, or distracting accessories.

  • Cropping your own body—agents need to see your full proportions.

Final Word

In today’s commercial modeling world, digitals are your golden ticket. They can get you signed, booked, and noticed before you even step foot in a casting room.

Take them seriously, refresh them often, and you’ll always be ready to seize an opportunity.
